Statement on Temporary Shelter Village
I am disappointed to hear that Thunder Bay City Council is once again considering the Miles Street location for the planned temporary shelter village. Back in November, when it was first being considered, I stated my unequivocal opposition to the site. Nothing has changed since then to make me reconsider my position. I remain strongly opposed to this proposal – for the same reasons that I previously opposed it. I believe that such a project is contrary to the interests of the people who live and have businesses in or near the south core.
I would like to reiterate that I am supportive of housing solutions for our vulnerable populations, and I have proposed several locations which would be better suited for such a project.
As the sole federal representative for the downtown south core, I will continue to vigorously oppose any federal funding for a temporary shelter village at the Miles Street site.
